That was the last thought i had of her before she suddenly came before me one day.
I was just walking home alone that day all my friends were at a movie I had already seen and I wasn't feeling like seeing it again so I didn't go. They had offered to change the movie or do something else but i just didn't feel like it so i told them to go and have fun. This was a rare thing to do. I mostly hung out with them or took a ride home with one of them. I had almost forgotten the feel of moist, clean air on my face and the smell of the roses near my house. It was so refreshing and I was suddenly in a very good mood. As I turned a corner I saw her, Sasha. She was looking very upset her bag was bulging and she had a lot of books in her hand. She was almost falling over with the load. As I saw her pity filled my heart. She had been having a hard time at school everyone was always teasing her and making weird noises at her in the hallways and classes. She had a weird laugh and the first time she laughed at school in the cafeteria everyone heard her and someone mimicked the sound and laughed. Since then it was the standing joke in school. I never encouraged it and looked disapprovingly at whoever did it in my presence but that was all I did. however looking at her today made my heart swell. I went over and smiled at her.
"Hi, you seem to be overloaded should I help?", said I.
She looked at me warily. She was looking to see if i would too make fun of her. That was all everyone approached her for. To look for a new reason to make fun of her but that was not my intention.
"Don't worry i'm not gonna make fun of you, I just wanna help."
"Thanks"she said and passed over her books to me and man were they heavy.
"Whats wrong with your locker?" I asked her trying to balance her books.
"Um just a little jammed i think , I'll have someone look at it tomorrow.
That was it. It was all it took for our friendship to start. We talked all the way to my house. We just lived a few houses apart and we soon became BFFs. She blossomed over the years under my guidance. I introduced her to my friends who were a little surprised at first but soon got over it and accepted her. She became popular among the school soon and people forgot everything about her weird start at high school. She was very happy in her life.
It was our senior year in school now and Sasha was so popular that she was made school president. I was still her BFF and the vice president. Our graduation was near and I had asked her to show me her speech but she said it was very personal and I would get to know about it soon enough.
As i sat in my seat on the day of our graduation and waited for Sasha to appear on the stage I looked around the hall. Everyone looked expectant and happy. It was hard to believe that a person who had not been accepted in school at all in her first term could become so popular.People in life are just so judgmental. My attention diverted i saw Sasha appear on the stage looking confident and mature. I shot her a thumbs up as she looked at me and she smiled back she reached the podium and adjusted her mike. She then began.
"Hello everyone I'm Sasha this year's president of the senior class. High school has been a very strange experience for me. When I first came here I was very expectant . I thought this place would be great and that I would love to be a part of it. My first day here was fine enough though I was clearly not accepted. But I still had hopes that I would fit in one day. All my hopes were crashed the next day when trying to be friends with someone I told them a joke and joined in their laughter. My laugh was an odd sound I knew but the reaction was unimaginable.Everyone in the cafeteria heard it and mimicked it making the sound worse than the original. I was the subject of every joke now and people would tease me wherever I went. Suddenly it seemed like I was the most detestable person in the world. The days got worse. I heard that sound the sound of my own laughter everyday. Repeated in the most ridiculous manners. I tried to endure it but it didn't stop. On Saturday the last day of my my first week in high school I was walking home alone. I meant to commit suicide that night and i had emptied my locker so that my poor mother wouldn't have to do it and carry all the contents home."
There was a collectible gasp from the whole hall at this statement. Who knew that our perfect Sasha the most popular person in our class had such a dark past. But no one was more stunned than I was I remembered that day clearly and I knew what changed Sasha's decision. I was rigid with shock.
" As I was walking down the street with all my books in my hand i saw Annie come towards me she asked if she could help me with my books and I agreed. She helped me carry them and asked if anything was wrong with my locker. I then realized that I should give life another try and answered that it was just jammed and I would have someone look at it tomorrow. Yes there would be a tomorrow because there was someone in my life who did not detest me who cared for me. Over the years we became best friends and she is the person I owe my life to. My best friend and life saver Annie Clark."
As the whole hall burst into applaud I understood what every little thought and every little action meant in our lives and the lives of others. So don't underestimate your thoughts and do every little thing you can to help others. You never know you might save a life.
